Nauvoo Pageant Service Projects
|
|

 |
|
There are a few service projects that are needed each year in
preparation for the Nauvoo Pageant. For example there is an "Off
Season Costuming Shop" explained below. Also the Pageant's
Frontier
Country Fair has a few suggestion for family, community or church
service projects. We have had a few Young Men use one of the items below
as an Eagle Scout Project. Thank you to all who have served
so faithfully in the past!
Each year we are in need of supplies that greatly aid
the FCF that happens prior to the pageant each night. These items being
prepared ahead of time are a great blessing to the pageant as well as
the lives of those that offer service in any way. Thos serving in the
cast each year provide a great benefit to this need. But even if you are
not able to attend the pageant, you can help by donating time and
supplies to this effort.
We have had wonderful service projects in Rag Dolls, Whirligigs, Rag Strips & Sock
Puppets. Please call Greg & Noni Davies at (801) 446-7283 or email
them at nauvoopageant.net@gmail.com to
let us know of your interest so we can coordinate efforts.
Transportation of the items to Nauvoo is often a difficult thing. We
would be happy to discuss options with you. Thank you again! Below are a
few of the projects we have an ongoing need of each year. |

Collect Fabric Squares for
"Hanky Dolls"
Sister
Louann Hunsaker (2010 Green Cast) introduced us to a great
activity that we have now incorporated into the Frontier Country
Fair. (Thanks Louann!)
We need 12" square pieces fabric to make handkerchief dolls.
A Muslin Fabric works best, but we can use any solid light color
with little or no
pattern since they draw a face on the doll at the activity.
Basically any fabric that would make a doll that would be
pleasing to a young girl would work.
We can also use donations of ¾" or 1" wide gathered lace or
eyelet to be used for the bonnets. We have the other supplies
needed to assemble the dolls during the Frontier Country Fair
each night.
The next part is to get the squares to Nauvoo! We have people
that can help with that depending on where you are. They can
also be mailed there.

Make
Whirligigs
Update July 5th 2011: We have greatly underestimated the demand
for these items. Immediate Help is needed :)
|
 |
|
Whirligigs or button spinners are those
wooden discs that have a string through them. When you pull the
strings apart the disc spins and makes a sound. This has been a
very popular activity for our Pageant guests. We give out
hundreds of them each night. Many young men did Eagle Scout
projects in the past, and we used thousands of them. We
are in constant need of these if you are willing to help!
We would love to have anyone that can donate the supplies and
more importantly the time and effort to drill them and donate
them. We have the string, but the discs are what is needed. We
feel we can go through 200-400+ each night of the 20 pageant
performances. This is somewhere between 4,000 and 8,000 of them
a year!

Creating, maintaining and
replacing the costume items that the Core Cast, Family Casts,
Young Performing Missionaries and Pre-Show casts is a very large
job. Our performing casts run around 500-700 people to costume
in each performing season. We discovered very quickly that we do
not have the time to create and maintain all of the items we
need during the seven weeks of the performing season.
Thus the
Nauvoo Pageant Off Season Costume Shop was created. We have
had the blessing of those who have been able to travel to Nauvoo
and many who would like to help that have not been to Nauvoo. We
are excited to open this special work to those who would like to
serve in this special effort. We also hope to offer some new and
varied skills for those who would like to serve. The
projects can be sent to you to complete and return to the
Costume Director Susi Geertsen.

Cut Rag Strips
|
|

|
|
Another popular activity in the Frontier Country Fair that
requires many hours of preparation each year is in the Rag Tying
Activity.
We are seeking volunteers to:
1) Gather fabric
2) Cut it into 2" x 45-60" strips (or width of the
fabric)
3) Loosely knot three color-coordinated strips together
4) Tie 100 of the knotted strips of 3 into one bundle
5) Arrange to get them to Nauvoo or notify us to help with their
transport.
Note: most any fabric and color (even with patterns) will work
for strips since they will be braided into a rug. Having strips
that are color coordinated tied together is a great help. The
donated fabric saves us a great amount of money and even more
importantly the cutting them into strips ready to use is greatly
appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!

Make
Sock Puppets
|
During the Puppet show children and guests are invited to
get a sock puppet that they keep as a souvenir and can take home with them.
A great service
project would be to:
1) Collect used/new socks (Clean, no holes, stains or anything
that looks dirty)
2) Decorate your sock with buttons or felt circles for eyes,
yarn for hair, etc.
3) Package the completed sock puppets in bags or boxes as you
see appropriate
4) Arrange to get them to Nauvoo (Note: We can
often help with transportation)
If you only have time to collect the socks, this is helpful also
as long as we can get them Nauvoo where others can help assemble
them.
But needed even more are completed sock puppets like the picture
to the right (or any variation)
The sock puppet to the right has sewn on eyes, but you can glue felt dots
or anything appropriate that would be appealing to a small
child. The imagination and variety of different puppets makes this great for our
young guests of the pageant. Again we go through hundreds
of these each evening!

Thank you again for the many offers to serve we receive each year.
It is
such a great blessing to build the kingdom in even seemingly small ways.
