Frontier Country Fair - Rag Strip Cutting

Back to Service Projects

The Preparation...
Volunteers cut thousands of strips ahead of time ready for the pageant. they tie three strips together with a loose knot ready for the pageant

During the Pageant's Frontier Country Fair each evening...
Guests use the pre-made strips to start a rag rug. Our young guests weave with them also.

When guests get home...
many continue with their rugs and complete them with the training they received in Nauvoo

Updated January 2011 - Strip Cutting Service Project:

We are still in need of 2" fabric strips to be cut to be used in the Rag Rug Braiding / Rag-tying activity during the Frontier Country Fair each year. If anyone is interested in doing this as a family /church service project please contact Greg or Noni with any questions by clicking here or call them at (801) 446-7283.

Brief Description
Broadcloth or cotton blend fabrics work best. Fabric needs to be cut in strips 2-inch wide by the length of the fabric--45 or 60 inches wide. Loosely knot three color coordinated strips together. (They can be a mix of 60 and 45 inch lengths.) Bundle 100 of these bundles of three with a fabric scrap. We are looking to "spread the love " and hopefully let others feel of the spirit of the pageant through this service.

The cut strips are best transported in black garbage bags, or similar containers. These bags are then transported to Nauvoo... which is sometimes the tricky part.

Transportation to Nauvoo can be arranged by getting the cut strips to Utah for Greg & Noni to arrange to get to Nauvoo, or by arranging to bring them yourself (if you are a cast member, etc) or sending them with someone that is heading to Nauvoo. Again contact Greg or Noni Davies with any questions by clicking here or call them at (801) 406-9502.

Please contact us as soon as you can so we can coordinate this effort.
Thank you in advance!

Here is a note from Noni (who knows much more about it than I do :) with better details: 2/11/09: Thanks for your interest in assisting us with cutting fabric strips for the rag-tying station at the pre-show.Keeping up with the needs for fabric for this station is one of our greatest challenges each summer as we go through more than 400 yards of fabric!!

We have found people often have fabric in their homes they would love to be used for such a project-any broadcloth works well, 100% cotton or a cotton blend. We can use any color or pattern--pink tends to be particularly popular. If fabric is donated that is large enough for lap-quilts (45 by 60 or larger) and is a print that would be interesting for a child, teenager or adult, you could set it aside and we will make it into a quilt to be tied during the pre-show.

Strips need to be 2 inches wide by the width of the fabric (45 or 90 inches) and cut from selvage to selvage--rotary cutters work great. If you have the woman-power to bundle the strips, that is also very helpful. Put three strips together that coordinate and knot them together so the knot is at the very end of the group. Then bundle these in groups of 100. (If you are not able to bundle them, we can do this later and are grateful for your cutting!!)

Thanks again for your willingness to serve. Please call with any questions--we are also happy to help correlate transportation of them to Nauvoo.

Many Thanks,

Greg & Noni Davies
